What stands as a true testament to improper garbage disposal methods is the supposed “toxic garbage island” floating out in the middle of the Pacific ocean. You may have heard of it by now as there have been plenty of articles and documentaries about it released.

While there might be some truths and falsehoods of the actual garbage island itself, it serves as a perfect anecdote for proper garbage disposal in Sussex County, New Jersey or other places.

The Truth About the Garbage Island

There’s no “Texas-sized island of garbage,” but…

In the Pacific ocean, there are several different current systems that carry things around. There’s the North Pacific, Kuroshio, California, and North Equatorial currents, all of which sit adjacent to one another.

What this does is it creates “pockets” of static water. It is in these areas that patches of garbage end up. Yes, there is no giant garbage island, but rather three different garbage patches. Those who have visited these areas will tell you that they are far from being islands, but the imagery stuck with them in a different, equally horrifying way.

Endless miles of litter.

How did this happen?

Unfortunately, we can’t change the past when the remnants of what we did still float in the oceans, polluting our waters and sea life. Thankfully, the majority of countries have vowed to never dump into the ocean again. So what’s done is done, but it can’t get any worse, right?

Also, unfortunately, there are still several major countries that see no issue in dumping into the ocean. Not to mention the amount of garbage that accidentally spills into the ocean or the plastic that ends up there through other means. Remember that dumping trash into a river means that there’s a high chance it’ll end up in the ocean.

We have taken major strides in the direction of fixing the situation. Like, get rid of microplastics, which accounts for most of the damage of plastic on the environment. Another major stride is proper waste management
