Often times when doing a home clean out or a small home renovation, people wonder if they should rent a dumpster or use a bagster. Customers may tend to lean towards a bagster, thinking it is cheaper and easier, but aren’t aware of all the extra charges and headaches that come along with a bagster. We are here to help! Based on our experience, the scenario pictured below is what happens to most of our customers. They rent a bagster, they are unable to fit their debris in it, and end up having too rent a dumpster from us too haul their garbage away. Size comparison

What can you fit in a bagster? A bagster holds only 3 cubic yards of debris compared to a 6yd dumpster that can hold 6 cubic yards of debris. The measurements of a bagster are typically 8 ft in length, 4 feet in width, and 2.5 feet in height.  The measurements of our 6yd dumpster at Montella is 5 ft in length, 6 ft in length, and 6 ft in height. The size difference allows you too fit 3 extra cubic yards of debris in the 6yd dumpster. Remember, the 6yd dumpster also has more volume too hold bulkier items than the bagster does. If you are disposing of large or bulky items, they may not fit in the bagster. Also remember, a bagster is flimsy and not as easy to load items into a dumpster. Essentially, it is just a large “bag”.

Many companies have regulations on the weight you can put in the bagster. Their website states “they will not pick up any bagster that has more than 1 cubic yard of heavy debris.” Are you able to determine how much of your waste is considered a “heavy debris”? The “Don’ts” of Renting a dumpster:

1.DON’T put hazardous materials in the dumpsters.

We always tell customers not to put any hazardous materials in the dumpsters, but sometimes people try to sneak these items in with their other trash. The problem with that is sometimes, what is pictured above may occur. Often times hazardous materials can cause a fire to start in the dumpster. All flammable items you have in the dumpsters will catch fire, and eventually if the fire is not contained, the area surrounding the dumpster can catch fire as well. This is a major safety hazard! Please think twice before you put any hazardous items into the dumpster for your safety and ours! If your hazardous waste slips through the cracks and gets taken to the dump yard, this can be a serious issue as well. We have had circumstances where the county dump yard has actually CAUGHT FIRE because we were unaware there were hazardous materials in the dumpster. This was not fun. 2. DON’T fill the dumpster over the top

This is another safety hazard and actually illegal for the roll-off driver to drive with a load like this on his truck. One way to avoid this is to make sure you are ordering the right size dumpster for the amount of waste you are throwing away. Imagine being behind that dumpster while you are driving? Hauling away a dumpster filled this high could cause everyone to start their morning off being gridlocked on the highway during their commute to work. If you find you have more waste/trash too dispose of than what will fit in the dumpster, one easy solution to this is to ask Montella for a “dumpster swap.” If you think you can fill up a whole other same sized dumpster, we can simply pick up the dumpster you have, dump it, and bring it back empty. If you think either you need a smaller dumpster for the waste you have left over, or a dumpster that is larger than the one you have, we can pick up the dumpster you have and bring you one that is a different dumpster size. 

In order to fill your dumpster efficiently without filling it over the top, or needing to order an additional dumpster, there are a few things you can do. First, you can break down any large or bulky items so that they take up less space. It may be a good idea to flatten any boxes as well. Second, make sure you are filling up all the empty space. Rather than just throwing whatever you find in the dumpster, you can often strategically place it so all the empty gaps are filled, allowing you to fit more. Finally, we find that if you try to load the bulkier items first putting them at the bottom of the dumpster, it allows you more space to throw other items in as well.

3. Don’t put “unacceptable items in the dumpster!

Did you know you will get charged for putting tires in a dumpster? Putting items in the dumpster that the company you rented from does not accept can be very costly for the customer.Companies charge anywhere from $25.00-$75.00 per tire. When renting a dumpster, make sure you ask which items are not allowed! If it is your first time renting a dumpster, you may have no idea there are certain items that are deemed “unacceptable items” by dumpster companies. Montella reads every customer a list of items that we do not accept and sends each customer an email with our list of unacceptable items after they place their orders. Things like TV’s, Computers, Refrigerators, and many other items will cause you to incur extra charges. In some cases, the dumpster may not be able to be removed until you take out the items. In  other cases they will take the items out and leave them at the property.

Understanding the sizes and dimensions that the dumpsters come in will help you to answer this question. Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards, based off of how much debris they hold. Common dumpster sizes are 10yd, 20yd, 30yd, and 40yd.

Typically, a 10yd dumpster is perfect for cleaning out a small basement or a garage. It can hold approximately 3 pick up truck loads. A 20yd dumpster can hold approximately 6 pickup truck loads, and may be better for you if you are disposing of bulkier items. REMEMBER you can not fill a dumpster over the top. A 30yd dumpster may be best if you are cleaning out multiple rooms or decluttering an entire house. It can fit approximately 9 pickup truck loads, and is 2 feet taller than the 20yd dumpster. Our 40yd dumpster is the largest size that we offer. This dumpster may be best is you are cleaning out debris from a hoarding situation or removing massive amounts of trash. 

What items can I put in the dumpster?

Although most items in your home you are able to dispose of in a dumpster, there are some common items that you are not allowed to put in there.

Furniture:

Mattresses, tables, couches, chairs, desks, dressers- pretty much any furniture item you are able to dispose of in a dumpster. The amount of larger size furniture items you are disposing of may affect what size dumpster you need.

Appliances:

Most appliances you CANNOT dispose of in the dumpster. Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, Washers and Dryers are all items that can not go in the dumpster. A basic rule of thumb, is no “white goods” can go into the dumpster.

Electronics:

Many electronics contain components that could be potentially dangerous to the environment. For this reason, anything considered to be “E-Waste” or “Electronic Waste” CANNOT go into the dumpster. Common items include TV’s, Computers, Monitors, and Laptops.

What happens if I put one of these “unacceptable items” in the dumpster?

Often times the dumpster company will pass along the extra fees it costs them too dispose of these items to the customers. Sometimes they will not pick up the dumpster until these items are removed, other times they will remove the item from the dumpster and leave it behind at the property.

What do I do with the Items I can’t put in the dumpster?

Good news is, often times items you do not want someone else will be happy to take! As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure! If you have working electronic items, you can sell them on Craigslist or to a second hand store. Apps such as “LetGo” and the “Marketplace” on facebook are other great ways to match buyers to sellers and make some extra cash off of your junk. 

DONATE THEM!

More good news, if you aren’t interested in selling your items, there are usually people out there who could benefit off of the items you were going to throw out. One option is to donate them to Goodwill or another donation center near you.Often time charities, churches, and non-profits will take working items such as computers, TV’s, and other appliances to give to families in need.  Some of them will even come and pick them up for you!

Items that no longer work:

Did you have a broken TV sitting in your basement for years that you now need to get rid of before you move? No problem! Often you can take broken TV’s or other electronics to the local recycling center and they will take care of it for you. Depending on where you live, the town may even offer curbside pickups of electronics. If you have questions about how this works in your town, contact your town’s Public Works department and they should be able to answer any questions you may have in regards to disposing of items we cannot accept.

This is a tricky question and is different from company to company. Fortunately, here at Montella Waste Disposal we can take a good deal of your garbage, but there are limitations for any company. Our main concern is the environment and your health. We definitely do not want you putting things into the dumpster that will get you sick or those around you, so we’ll start with dangerous items that just handling them will get you sick or hurt.

With a lot of the older buildings and remodeling of the buildings and areas that contain these buildings is asbestos. Asbestos can cause cancer as well as other diseases, so even you coming across it and touching it is a huge hazard. New Jersey is riddled with asbestos and that is in part of the production of it from Johns Manville in the town named after the company called Manville, so much so that when they were manufacturing it, it would be snowing asbestos in the town and surrounding areas.

Another item that we frequently see is pool chemicals in our dumpsters and in the trash. These are extremely bad for us because when they enter the dump or landfill in New Jersey, then can then seep into the soil and get back into our water system. These are highly toxic chemicals that are meant to kill all the bad stuff that can grow in our pools and the same stuff that can make everyone extremely sick if it got into our water supply. If these chemicals get into our waterways, they will also kill off all the natural wildlife. That same wildlife is needed to keep us alive and well too. Without it we’d have a dying ecosystem around us from the pool treatment chemicals like chlorine and anything hta is used to kill algae; and algae is needed in our waterways in order to maintain a healthy ecosystem.

If you are disposing of concrete, we have dumpster for that, so please ask us about those particular dumpsters that will bring the old concrete to facilities that can recycle concrete. Concrete is very porous and can contain hazardous materials that it absorbs over the duration of its life. Concrete’s life can be over 100 years do to its durability, so it has the ability to absorb years and years of contaminants and pose a great risk to waterways when it is disposed of improperly. Proper disposal of concrete keeps with Montella’s mission of keeping you and our community safe from toxins that can make us all unhealthy.

We also find propane tanks from time in our dumpsters. This can be extremely hazardous if there is pressure put on these tanks. Definitely make sure you don’t put propane tanks in the dumpster. If it doesn’t explode and in a rare case, someone gets hurt, you are then liable for any damages done to people or property. Propane tanks can be recycled - no matter what shape they are in a recycling facility will take them. 

Batteries are now recycled almost everywhere due to the need for their materials in making additional batteries. Car batteries are recycled 90% of the time at any automotive part store. Some other batteries like your button batteries are also in high demand - also bring your used motor oil, antifreeze and gas there as well.. You can drop your household batteries off at Best Buy or Target as well. Batteries contain hazardous materials that can pollute our community if disposed of in a landfill, so we take great care in making sure that our customers know not to put batteries in our dumpsters.
